Below are stories in the SendtoNews archives that indicate Terrorism as their primary category:
Terrorism has always been a threat to America, yet it seems that it is only recently that it has been in the forefront of the American consciousness. In the 1970's, terrorism news included stories of hijackings and kidnappings and numerous other events- not just in America, but throughout the world. But from that time all the way through the late 1990's, there was very little thought given to the threat that terrorism might pose the US.
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, people all over the world became more aware, in fact hyperaware, of the continuing existence of terrorism. News reports were full of stories of various religious and military sects throughout the world who were plotting attacks on innocent civilians.
In some parts of the world, of course, terrorism news is an everyday part of life. In Israel, for example, public bombings are a regular occurrence and schoolchildren are taught from an early age to watch for danger and how to respond in such situations.
In America, where we do not consider terrorism to be an ever-present threat, most people hope to keep children blissfully unaware of such events by limiting their exposure to media. All types of media, from newspapers to television and internet news outlets have stepped up their coverage of any events that could be construed as terrorism-related. This has created something of a culture of fear, where average civilians believe that the threat to their safety is much greater than it is. You would never know from reading terrorism news that the chance of becoming a victim in a terrorist attack in this country is virtually zero.
