One issue that is currently a hot topic concerning food supply news is the dangerous effects that the company Monsanto is having on the world’s food supply and general health. Monsanto is the company who developed Roundup in the 1970s and new reports have confirmed that the product’s active ingredient is threatening the crop-yielding potential of the entire biosphere. Roundup may also be causing irreversible damage to the microbiodiversity of the soil which also compromises the health of the planet.
Recent studies have been conducted concerning the affects of Roundup on the health benefits of raw and fermented food. The study looked specifically at the bacteria Lactobacillus cremoris, which is found in some food starters for raw yogurt. This bacterium is helpful in promoting a healthy digestive system. The study found that this strain of bacteria has entirely disappeared from regions where it was plentiful before. The bacteria can still be found in regions where farmers use less than the suggested amount of Roundup that are usually recommended in agricultural practices.
The results of the study found that farmers who have to use larger amounts of Roundup or other herbicide formulas that contain similar chemicals to combat the weeds that become resistant to the product are causing damage to health of the soil. Not only is the health of soil being compromised but the use of Roundup is also damaging the yield of food starter microorganisms that are necessary for human health. This chemical affects the food supply news because it is harming the fertility of the soil which will have negative impact on the soil to be able to produce crops in the future.
