In recent years, soccer has gained popularity in America. As more people become soccer fans and players, they gain appreciation for soccer games. In order to truly enjoy a soccer game, a person must understand the basics of soccer.

Professional level soccer games are played with 11 players, including 10 field players and one goalie (also known as a “keeper”). The goalie is the only player allowed to use his or her hands within the box surrounding the goal they are guarding. Each team is allowed to use whichever formation best fits their style, but one of the most common lineups is a 4-4-2, which includes four defenders, four midfielders, and two forwards. Soccer is unique in that an entire team works together to play offense and defense, however, forwards more often score and defenders usually concentrate on defending their goal from the forwards of the opposing team.

Field size is also important in soccer games. A professional soccer field is in between 100 and 130 yards long and 50 and 100 yards wide. Often times, a wider field offers an advantage because it opens up the space for players. In the center of the field is a large circle, which is where the kickoff takes place.

In addition to technicalities, soccer games have an unforgettable environment. The fans are just as supportive and dedicated, if not more, than fans of any other major sport. Soccer players at the professional level get the opportunity to play for more than themselves. Whether it’s the mother of a pewee player or the massive crowds at the World Cup, soccer has progressed and continues to gain fans.
